Charlotte Carpenter releases her debut album, A Modern Rage, and I had the privilege of working closely with her to develop the visual graphics for her vinyl release. Using striking photography by Esme Buxton, I designed an impactful double gatefold vinyl cover that visually encapsulates the themes and emotions woven throughout the album. Additionally, I created the internal double gatefold sleeve design, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic, and handled the retouching of the cowboy boot image to enhance its presence within the artwork.
The music itself played a significant role in shaping my design choices. A Modern Rage is an album that balances intensity with precision, its songs are raw yet structured and deliberate in their composition. I wanted the artwork to mirror this duality. When developing the typography style I aimed for something simple and structured, yet tight in its lockup, reflecting the controlled yet visceral nature of the music. To contrast this, I incorporated hand-drawn scribbles. This juxtaposition between clean, bold typography and chaotic marks visually represents the emotional depth of the album: rage that is both articulated and instinctive.
